The Impacts of Taking Multiple MOOCs on Self-directed Learning Skills

Abstract

Self-directed learning (SDL) has become increasingly important for student success as more and more students enroll in massive open online courses (MOOCs). This study examines the impacts of taking multiple MOOCs on the SDL skills of university students. Using an exploratory research design, this qualitative study selected participants based on their familiarity and experience with MOOCs and the number of MOOCs they had taken. Potential participants were screened using a survey, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 university students. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings indicate that MOOCs offer a flexible and interactive learning platform that motivates students to take multiple courses. Students are more aware of their learning needs and actively seek out specific types of MOOCs. Participants were also efficiently able to develop skills like goal setting, self-evaluation, time management, and self-management as they pursued multiple MOOCs. The paper discusses the implications of these findings for MOOC providers and for educators who seek to foster self-directed learning among their students.
